Haitian Patties

Authentic Haitian Patties are a specialty appetizer that can be found at every event. The pastry is generally filled with various meats, including beef, chicken, pork, and fish. Besides being offered as an appetizer at multiple gatherings, Haitian patties are a must-have while tasting Haitian cuisine for the first time.

The word patty is derived from the French word pâté, which refers to a meat stuffing baked in a pastry shell. It is possible that these miniature pie preparations were introduced into the region during the English and French colonization of the Caribbean.

How to make Haitian Patties?

There are numerous recipes available that demonstrate step-by-step how to prepare this delectable dish from Haiti. We will not add another to the plethora of options already available on the market.

It would be nice if you had both the dough and the filling on hand before attempting to make this patty. Combine the flour, salt, and water in a large mixing basin and knead for a few minutes, or until a stiff dough is formed. If the dough is too sticky, add more flour. Roll out the dough to about 1/4-inch thickness and use a biscuit cutter or drinking glass to cut into rounds. Place on a lightly greased baking sheet and brush with butter or oil.Butter:2 sticks of unsalted butter, at room temperature1/4 teaspoon salt

Place a plastic wrap over the dough and allow it to rest at room temperature for 20 minutes while you prepare the filling.

Remove the dough from the plastic wrap, sprinkle flour on the work area, and roll the dough into a rough rectangular form.

Fold the dough in thirds, like a letter, to make a square. Turn the container 90 degrees, roll it up, and fold it again.

Repeat the process 2 to 4 more times, then cover the dough in plastic wrap and place it in the refrigerator for 2 hours.

The filing is mainly done with beef, chicken, or fish. For example, to make the beef filling, you need to mix ground beef, diced onions, tomato paste, your favorite seasoning, oil, eggs, Haitian seasoning, etc.
